Daniel Boone Cabin Logs and Daniel Boone Logs

Daniel Boone Cabin Logs were first introduced in about 1929. They were manufactured by the following company:
Woodcraft Novelty Company
Boone, North Carolina
Originally, the logs were 5/8-in. in diameter and were natural wood without dye. The logs were round with “annular grooves” rather than notches like Lincoln Logs. At that time sets came in only one size with 58 pieces.
On March 18, 1929, David F. Greene of Boone North Carolina applied for a U.S Patent for his design of these logs. The Patent was granted on July 29, 1930, Patent Number 1,771,783.
By 1933, the logs were being made in a larger 3/4-in. diameter and were dyed brown, with green gables and roof slats and red chimneys. In 1933 there were four set sizes: Set 0, Set 1, Set 2, and Set 3, with 38, 61, 99, and 197 pieces, respectively. The smallest set (Set 0) came with a green cardboard roof rather than slats for the roof.
In 1935, Daniel Boon Cabin Logs were being sold under the name Daniel Boone Logs, and they were being manufactured by a different company in a different location, as follows:
Pioneer Toys, Inc.
Johnson City Tennessee
The same patent number is listed in the new instruction booklet. Therefore, it appears that the original company was sold, patent and all, to a new firm.
In 1936 there were five set sizes: Set 1/ 2, Set 1, Set 2, Set 3, and Set 5.
The new owner of Daniel Boone Logs wasted no time in modifying the design to his liking. The 1936 instruction booklet shows redesigned roof supports, gables, and roof slats, although the basic design of the logs remained unchanged.
